Tondavo
Send a file to a device in the same room.
Tondavo encrypts the file in your browser and plays the key out loud as a short sound. The other device hears it, downloads the encrypted copy and unlocks it. No account, no install, and the two devices don't need the same Wi-Fi.
Tondavo is the new name for chirpfile. The app still runs at chirpfile.com while the move finishes.
How it works
- Open the app on both devices. On the receiving one, tap Tap to Listen and allow the microphone.
- On the sending device, drop in a file or type a message. The browser encrypts it with AES-128-GCM and uploads only the encrypted copy.
- The speaker plays a one-to-three-second chirp carrying the key. The other device hears it, downloads the file and decrypts it. The relay deletes its copy.
What to know
- It works across networks. A phone on mobile data and a laptop on hotel or office Wi-Fi can swap files, because neither needs to see the other on a network.
- The devices must be in the same room. Within about a meter in Silent mode, a few meters in Audible mode.
- Short messages are not encrypted. Up to 120 characters travels as sound alone, readable by anyone nearby with a decoder. Send secrets as a file.
- The relay sees the file name. Contents are encrypted; the name and size are not.
- Free up to 15 MB. Pro raises it to 1 GB for $0.99 a day or $4.99 a month.
